Shutdown Portraits: The GOP's Anger Pose

When I came upon this shot of Newt from the ’95 government shutdown, I thought that pose looked awfully  familiar.

photo 1:  Chuck Kennedy/Newscom (via TPM) caption: After President Clinton vetoed the spending bill sent to him by Congress, the government furloughed non-essential workers and closed many services. Pictured here are Rep. John Kasich (R-OH), Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole (R-KS) House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-GA), Sen. John Warner (R-VA), Sen. Pete Domenici (R-NM), and Sen. Connie Mack (R-FL.)

photo 2: REUTERS/Jim Young caption: U.S. House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) (L) and House Minority leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) listens to remarks by Israeli President Shimon Peres after their meeting on Capitol Hill in Washington, April 6, 2011.

photo 3: AP Photo/Susan Walsh caption: Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Ky., accompanied by Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., speaks to reporters on Capitol Hill in Washington, Tuesday, April 5, 2011.

photo 4: J. Scott Applewhite/AP. caption: Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., the ranking Republican on the Senate Budget Committee, attends a news conference with House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis., on cutting federal spending in future budgets, at the Capitol in Washington, Tuesday, April 5, 2011.
