Indelible in Their Own Way

Margaret Thatcher 1974

I was compelled to post these specific photos (no, not because of the complimentary color schemes, but) because hi and lo culture have largely achieved parity when it comes to today’s media. Also, the red briefcase of the British Secretary of State for Education and Science looks like it would belong in either photo. And, the way the eventual Prime Minister so confounded the female role (as we’ve already noted) makes this scene not just fabulous but fabulously peculiar.

Bottom line, the world lost two iconic women this week (and I’m disappointed no one had the nerve to do a combined slideshow).

The attache case for secretary of State for education and science is on the right of the picture, taken in 1974. Thatcher was elected leader of the Conservative Party in 1975, and in 1979 became Britain’s first female prime minister. .)
