Health and Care: Our Social Media Roundup of the Week

Our roundup this week focuses on the healthcare fight and the treatment of women, and how the two issues ended up intertwined. The common thread is “meanness,” as well as Trump’s misogyny when the pressure becomes too great. This week, we also broadened our focus to address international humanitarian issues, crises and media framing. We highlighted the photo of a Syrian break-the-fast meal that defied the typical stereotyping. A photo of the Grenfell tower was more aching than most. And we called attention to a shot from Venezuela which, like a piece of tribal art, served to remind us how the meltdown there has remained largely unseen in the States.

Misery is an easy stereotype. This is the rare western newswire photo depicting devastation as matter-of-fact — and no obstacle to grace or keeping on.⠀ ⠀ Reposting @time:⠀ …⠀ “Today, June 24, 2017, marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan. Since May 26, Muslims around the world have observe a daily fast and devoted a particular focus to prayer, purification and charitable acts. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Here, Syrians living in the rebel-held town of Douma, on the outskirts of the capital Damascus, break their fast with the “iftar” meal, during Ramadan, on a heavily damaged street on June 18, 2017. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Photograph by Hamza Al-Ajweh—@afpphoto/@gettyimages.”⠀ ⠀ #Syria #dignity #fortitude #Damascus #Muslims #Iftar #douma #ramadan #rubble #grace
