An Uncanny Way of Seeing Donald Trump’s Woman Problem

On stage in Chester County, Pennsylvania, Melania Trump delivered a rare campaign speech on the last Friday before the 2016 presidential election. photo: Leigh Vogel/Instagram.

Fading into the darkness? Or emerging into the light? Either way, this photo of Melania Trump offers an uncanny way of seeing Donald Trump’s woman problem. As women come forward to accuse him of sexual violence, he continues to shift the blame in the hope that his accusers will disappear. The shadowed face calls to mind how Donald Trump, by his own words, sees women as bodies and not as humans. How ironic that here, Melania Trump visualizes the anonymity that shrouds her husband’s history with women.
