Chatting the Pictures: Israel’s “Democracy SOS”

Welcome to Chatting the Pictures. Every two weeks, we present a short, lively video discussion between Michael Shaw, publisher of Reading the Pictures, and writer, professor, and historian, Cara Finnegan, examining a significant picture in the news. Chatting the Pictures is produced by Liliana Michelena.

About the Video

This aerial photo from Tuesday, July 18, 2023, reveals a sea of protesters flooding Tel Aviv’s streets, decrying Benjamin Netanyahu’s government. Distributed by Anadolu Agency/Getty Images, the photo captures public outrage following a parliamentary bill passed the previous week. This bill empowers parliament to reverse court decisions, widely viewed as Netanyahu’s attempt to undermine the Supreme Court and evade corruption investigation. The protests were also fueled by the rise of right-wing extremism, the scale and intensity of the Palestinian occupation, and the firing of the Tel Aviv police chief for refusing to violently suppress anti-government protesters.

In the video, we note the scale of the protests targeted at media drones and worldwide attention. We also discuss the SOS distress signal, other dramatic scenes of internal strife, and how little outside impact it’s having.
